DAYTON — Mom and dad said there would be days like this.
When your golf ball trickles out of bounds on one hole and finds the water on another.
Emma Jandel, the Ohio State senior from Oakwood High School, promises to bounce back on the road to turning pro next summer.
Her 79 in the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship qualifier at Walnut Grove C.C. on Thursday, July 16, was more mirage than measuring stick of her true ability, as she didn’t qualify.
“I just have to keep my head up and keep going off the positive things I’m doing well,” Jandel said. “I’ve just got to do better next time.”
University of Louisville junior Laura Anderson, of Tompkinsville, Ky., captured medalist honors with a 1-over-par 73.
Richmond (Ind.) High School junior Trisha Witherby (74), Mason High School junior Erin Michel (75), University of Virginia senior Carly Truitt (75) and University of Kentucky senior Kristin Vincent (75) also earned berths in the prestigious event Aug. 3-9 at Old Warson Country Club in St. Louis.
“I thought I’d have to shoot a whole lot lower than that to make medalist,” Anderson said. “But with the slope in the greens and the wind picking up, I’m happy to walk out with a 73. My irons, I just hit ’em really pure. I made a lot of good putts to save par.”
Anderson’s only mistake was a three-putt bogey on 18.
“I got a little too greedy,” she said. “I wanted to make it to go under (par) and didn’t leave myself a very good putt on the way back.”
Witherby was the leader in the clubhouse most of the day.
“My driver worked really well,” she said. “I was hitting my irons pretty good into the greens and I didn’t have many long putts.”
Truitt, from Marysville, Ohio, was 4 over after five holes.
“I told myself, ‘Just calm down,’ ’’ she said. “I got it back together after that.”
Eight threesomes were on the course when Michel posted a 75. The waiting game was excruciating.
“I’ve never been more nervous in my life,” Michel said. “This is really exciting.”
Vincent, playing in the second-last threesome, was the final qualifier.
She was 1 under through eight “then I kind of blew up,” she said. “But I ate a little snack and held it together.”
