Former Ohio State quarterback Todd Boeckman, who was not offered a contract by the Cincinnati Bengals after attending their rookie minicamp, signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars on Wednesday, June 17.
The 25-year-old St. Henry native started the first three games of his senior season last year before Terrelle Pryor took over. Boeckman threw 31 career touchdown passes in 27 games.
Cleo Lemon backed up David Garrard last season, but the Jaguars parted ways with Lemon on Wednesday, leaving the backup job to veteran Todd Bouman. Boeckman will compete for the No. 3 spot.
Leaf apprehended
Former NFL quarterback Ryan Leaf was in custody Wednesday in Washington on drug and burglary charges out of Texas after being arrested by customs agents as he returned to the United States from Canada.
James Farren, the district attorney in Randall County in West Texas, said Leaf was arrested by federal customs agents. Legal assistant Jennifer Bonstein said Leaf declined to waive extradition during a hearing Wednesday afternoon in Bellingham, Wash., about 90 miles north of Seattle.
The ex-Washington State and San Diego Chargers quarterback is charged with burglary to a habitation, a second-degree felony.
T.O. still shopping
Hold off on that housewarming gift, Bills fans. Terrell Owens’ search for a place to live in Buffalo is back on.
Some 15 hours after the receiver posted on his Twitter.com site that his search for a home was over, Owens changed course Wednesday afternoon after his real-estate agent, Maureen Flavin, spoke to numerous media outlets, including The Associated Press.
Tweeting in all capital letters, Owens accused Flavin of being unprofessional, while noting that he will not be renting the place in question. In a follow-up post, Owens added that he couldn’t believe “she would do (that) after we specifically talked (to) her about confidentiality.”
Plaxico to the Bucs?
Plaxico Burress is intent on playing in 2009, and it appears he wouldn’t mind doing so in Tampa Bay.
The former Giants receiver, who is embroiled in a legal snarl and faces weapons charges in New York after an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound last year, has reached out to Buccaneers running back Derrick Ward and others on the team to express interest.
