SPRINGFIELD — Five colleges sent Trey DePriest a football scholarship offer via fax on Tuesday, Sept. 1.
The sixth came on Wednesday and arrived in the mail. It was from Ohio State.
The Springfield High School linebacker, one game into his junior season, opened his mail late Tuesday. He was surprised to see the Ohio State envelope.
“I knew it was going to come sometime, but I thought it would come after football season, real late after football season,” DePriest said.
Tuesday was the first day that juniors can receive written scholarship offers from college coaches. The 6-foot-1, 220-pound all-purpose player has in-hand offers from West Virginia, Pittsburgh, Duke, Stanford, Notre Dame, and now Ohio State. Five others gave verbal offers — Virginia Tech, Cincinnati, Oklahoma, Michigan and Central Michigan.
“It’s something positive about the program and it’s something positive about the school,” Springfield assistant coach John Cupps said. “He’s the right kid to be ambassador of the school.”
Because he’s got the rest of this year, and then his senior year to make a decision, DePriest is taking his time in sorting through his options.
“I’m still going into everything with open eyes and let everything come in time,” he said. “I’ve got this year and all of next year to make a decision.”
In the meantime DePriest is content to play football and not fret over the recruiting process.
“I am excited, but I like to keep myself humble,” Trey said. “You can’t let it go to your head, because that’s when things start to go bad.”
DePriest scored four touchdowns in the season-opening win against Hamilton High School on Aug. 29, but his main position is linebacker.
