COLUMBUS, Ohio — What's brewing with the 2010 Ohio State Buckeyes ...

BUCKEYES BUZZ: Solomon Thomas, Johnathan Hankins and Adam Bellamy will likely get sizable chunks of playing time on Thursday night at 7:30 when the Buckeyes open their season against Marshall.

Coach Jim Tressel disclosed Monday that starting DE Nathan Williams, who has been limited throughout fall camp because of a knee injury, will not play against the Thundering Herd.

Tressel was asked if Williams, a junior, might be back for the Sept. 11 game against No. 13 Miami.

"Oh, yeah. That's what he says," the coach said.

Hankins is a massive freshman (6-3, 335) who has had an impressive August. Thomas is a junior and Bellamy a redshirt freshman, all of whom are defensive linemen.

In other injury news, S Orhian Johnson and CB Devon Torrence have been participating in drills and are expected to play against Marshall. CB Chimdi Chekwa has been nursing a minor injury. His availability won't be determined until later.

VOLUNTEERS, NOT FROM TENNESSEE: Ohio State student-athletes combined for 6,883 service hours during the 2009-10 academic year, according to the university's athletic communications department.

The football team ranked third among Ohio State's 36 teams with 642.5 hours, volunteering time to more than 45 local schools.

PUMP UP THE VOLUME: LB Brian Rolle says that the guy most likely to raise his voice on the 2010 Ohio State team is DE Cameron Heyward.

"He's a guy who can yell and it's just something that he does naturally," Rolle said. "Me, I'm not a yelling guy. Cameron does that and he doesn't even think about it."

So are there players on offense who yell a lot?

"Not really. Those guys don't really yell," Rolle said. "They just stand over there and talk to each other."

TRESSELESE: The coach tried to address the hot topic of whether the Michigan-Ohio State game should be played on the last Saturday of the regular season. At least that's what it seemed he was trying to do. But he clearly didn't want to offend anyone as he spoke on Monday to reporters:

"We do try to focus on the moment. What's most important to us right now are these 25 seniors and this 2010 Buckeye football team and the team itself, the group, where we fit in the whole picture is what's important. That's the way we feel. That's the way we've always felt. And obviously you've gotten a zillion and we've gotten a zillion e-mails about what's going to happen in the future from a conference standpoint and from a rivalry game standpoint and all those things ...

"There's debates back and forth as to what's the best thing, we all have opinions and there's always debates about the pluses and minuses of championship games and all that stuff. We had the debate within our league that where we have to move our final league weekend back to Thanksgiving weekend, I'm one of those old-fashioned guys, I kind of liked sending my players home for Thanksgiving, but the group felt that the best thing to do was what it was, so with all that being said, I guess my stance on all of this stuff is what I am going to be in favor of is what the group needs and what the group decides, but what I'm going to do is I'm going to focus on those 25 seniors and that 2010 football team and not allow myself to get distracted and so forth about all of the discussion."

ZERO WASTE: The Ohio State Alumni Association's Scarlet, Gray, and Green Buckeye Bash on Saturday, Sept. 11, will be the university's first large-scale zero-waste event.

A zero-waste event is one in which event organizers plan ahead to reduce solid waste from the event, reuse various elements such as banners, and set up recycling for those recyclable materials such as paper cups, food scraps, and plastic water bottles that are generated by the event.

The bash will be held from noon to 2 p.m. on the day of the Miami game, outside Longaberger Alumni House. The game with the Hurricanes begins at 3:30 p.m.

Tickets for the bash are $10 for Alumni Association members and $15 for non-members.
