If you’re going to attend one Gems game this season, the Thanksgiving Eve bash against another hockey team might be the one. It’s Dollar Beer Night! This means fans will see how many cups of bad tap beer they can drink. Then they might try to storm the ice. The over/under for cops cruising Shiloh Springs Road will be 57. This could be Dayton’s entertainment event of the year, but remember to pack a helmet.

Messy Michigan: We hear about Jim Tressel’s brand of football a lot. Sometimes the Buckeyes’ plodding style is even looked upon as a positive, such as, “Well, Tressel wouldn’t go for it on fourth down on his own 28 against the Colts.”

We saw Tressel Ball at its best against Michigan. Run the ball, win special teams, force mistakes. When Tate Forcier’s end-zone fumble gave the Buckeyes an early lead, we knew what was coming next: nothing fancy ... and a sixth straight win over the School Woody Loved to Hate.

And, of course, the Buckeyes didn’t cover the spread.

Beach ball: Assuming Marcus Johnson locates the basket sometime soon and Chris Wright stops trying to be Curly Neal, UD appears to have a chance to stay in the Top 25 for a long time.

The Flyers, who would deem a 2-1 mark in Puerto Rico a success, are a talented bunch who can hang with the big boys. And it’s obvious that Chris Johnson and Luke Fabrizius filled in their summer shot charts.

Tell the truth: French soccer player Thierry Henry admitted to touching the ball with his hand seconds before a teammate scored the winning goal against Ireland in a World Cup qualifier.

Great. It would’ve been much more admirable had Henry immediately approached the ref and invoked the honor system. He might have been pilloried by the French for showing such courage, but it would’ve been a fine show of sportsmanship.

Talk to the judge: About the only thing that has gone wrong for the UC football team this season is Zach Collaros’ legal issues. The Bearcats’ skilled backup quarterback was busted awhile back for trying to use a fake ID at a bar. College kids have been known to try that now and then.

Collaros failed to participate in a diversion program, much to the dismay of the judge hearing his case. Apparently if Collaros does not behave himself, he could face 180 days in jail. For using a fake ID. He needs a better lawyer.

Knucklehead
of the Week

Michigan running back Michael Shaw was a hot topic during the Ohio State-UM game for all the wrong reasons. Prior to kickoff, the Trotwood-Madison High School graduate went out of his way to bump into an unsuspecting Buckeye in the tunnel that leads to the Michigan Stadium turf. Then he started barking at the OSU player, who wasn’t even in uniform. That was the highlight of Shaw’s day. He ended up with 7 yards rushing on seven carries.
