Brady Quinn’s NFL career hasn’t exactly gone according to plan.
First he dropped much further than anticipated on draft day, falling to Cleveland, where he languished for three seasons. After a trade that’s more notable for bringing Peyton Hillis to the Browns, he has now spent two seasons with the Broncos and doesn’t have a snap to show for it.
Part of the reason for his inactivity has been the rise of Tim Tebow, who earned the starting quarterback spot — leapfrogging Quinn — during this past season and led Denver to the second round of the playoffs.
Understandably, that’s got to be frustrating for Quinn, who is now an unrestricted free agent. But on Tuesday he commited the faux pas of letting some of that anguish out — and on a big stage, no less.
In “The Year of Magical Stinking: An Oral History of Tebow Time,” a piece compiled for the March edition of GQ by Yahoo! columnist Michael Silver, Quinn made three statements that have thrust him into the media spotlight.
His first two contributions were arguably things we already knew: Denver’s fans played a major role in Tebow getting a chance to play and the Broncos’ style of offense wore down defenses during the first three quarters, which created the opportunity for “Tebow Time” to come about.
Both of those assessments can be considered accurate, but it’s not exactly Quinn’s role to help point that out. Instead, he only succeeded in displaying his resentment, which won’t curry much favor in any locker room.
But those words weren’t as incendiary as his last remark, where he questioned Tebow’s humility.
“If you look at it as a whole, there’s a lot of things that just don’t seem very humble to me.”
Quinn has since apologized, claiming the story misrepresented his true feelings.
In the public eye, though, the damage may have been done. No matter where he ends up next season, hopefully he’s learned to save his statements for the field.
