Three games await Flyers in Puerto Rico

The Week Ahead: No. 21 Dayton vs. No. 22 Georgia Tech, 11:30 a.m. Thursday, in Puerto Rico Tip-off Classic; Dayton vs. either No. 5 Villanova or George Mason, 1 p.m. or 3 p.m. Friday; Consolation or championship game, Sunday. TBA.

UD Player of the Week: Chris Johnson. The super soph had 18 points and 15 rebounds in a 90-80 win over Creighton, the most boards by a Flyer since Charles Little snared 16 in 2006-07.

Stat of Week: The Flyers were just 16-of-37 from the field (43.2 percent) in the first half against Creighton but recovered after intermission, hitting 18-of-32 attempts (56.3 percent).

UD actually got off to a hot start but ended up taking too many hurried shots.

“We scored early against it, and now all of a sudden we think we’re going to make two passes and get a shot,” UD coach Brian Gregory said. “We needed to be patient against the zone and break it down.”

FYI: Point-guard play for the Flyers will need to be better in San Juan, but having London Warren on the bench in foul trouble probably contributed to a spotty performance against Creighton. Mickey Perry, who’s the back-up until Rob Lowery returns later this month, missed his first six shots before hitting his final fling. Warren had eight assists but also four turnovers in 21 minutes.

Quote: Gregory, asked about the output of Johnson and fellow sophomores Paul Williams and Luke Fabrizius, who had nine points each, commented: “Our sophomore class saved our rear ends. I thought we got a little bit from everybody.”

.

Inside post defense will have to improve if the Flyers hope to get a win vs. GA Tech. Creighton was able to spread us out and isolate their fine post players so that other Flyers could't double down, and etc. But, that was probably BG's strategy because inside outside passes to an excellent bunch of three point shooters is just what Dana Altman's offense is designed for.

Rebound, transition points, intensity, and shooting the ball well will carry the day in PR.
