Moraine Country Club’s golf course, a challenging venue for the recent Ohio Amateur Championship, will provide a test for another strong field of golfers Monday, July 27.
Moraine will host a qualifying round for the U.S. Amateur Championship to be held Aug. 24-30 at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla.
Seventy-eight players will play 36 holes to identify three participants and two alternates for the event. Many of those who played in the Ohio Am will return to Dayton for this competition.
They include Ohio Am winner Alex Martin of Middletown and Indiana University, who shot a course-record 63 in a practice round.
Martin will be paired with Ohio State University golfer Bo Hoag of Upper Arlington, who did not play in the Ohio Am because of a previous commitment.
Dayton-area entrants of note include: Ben Boyer of Oakwood, the current club champion at Moraine; four-time Miami Valley Metropolitan champion Peter Samborsky of Beavercreek; Ohio High School Division II champion Sam Jandel of Oakwood; former Duke University golfer and Moraine member Michael Castleforte of Chicago; and Jeffrey Scohy of Bellbrook, a former Air Force and Armed Services champ.
First-round tee times run from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. Second-round tee times are 5½ hours later. The public is welcome.
Bernard enters Miami Valley Metro
Michael Bernard, the 15-year-old golfing phenom from Huber Heights who played so well in the Ohio Amateur, has decided to accept another big challenge. The Wayne High School sophomore will play in the 72-hole Miami Valley Metropolitan Championship, Aug. 6-9 at Miami Valley Golf Club.
The Metro is the most prestigious of the present Dayton-area men’s tournaments as it draws the best players. The aforementioned Samborsky has won the past three after winning his first title in 2002.
Other recent champs: Bob Jones (2005), Marty Miller (2004), Ron Eubel (2003), Mike Suttman (2000-2001), Bob Eardley (1999), Dale Shires (1998), Matt Ehlinger (1997) and Greg Lawrence (1996).
Nels wins state women’s tourney
Daryl Nels of Beavercreek added another trophy to her collection when she won the Women’s Ohio State Golf Association senior championship Tuesday at Greene Country Club.
Nels was tied with two-time champion Mary Ann Bierman of Chagrin Falls after 36 holes with a 150 total. After the two parred four straight holes in a playoff, Nels won the title by sinking a 3½-foot birdie putt on the fifth hole.
Local junior players tee it up at Optimist
Several junior golfers from the Miami Valley are participating in the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships at PGA National Resort and Spa in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

Hundreds of junior golfers ages 10-18 have traveled from throughout the world to play in the annual tournament.
Founding member of Larch Tree dies
Reader Alan King of Lebanon called my attention to the recent death (July 7) in Myrtle Beach, S.C., of former Clayton resident Jim Moloney, 71.
A graduate of Chaminade High School, Moloney worked 46 years for Hohman Plating and was one of the founding members of Larch Tree Country Club in 1973.
King, who caddied with Moloney at Miami Valley Golf Club when they were teenagers, said his old friend enjoyed the golfing experience as much as anyone he’s known.
“Jim kept a log of all of the rounds he played for the last 45 years with details about playing partners, holes birdied, course conditions, course caliber, money won, money lost and, after relocating to Myrtle Beach, the slope rating,” King said.
