Really, just how much happens during the NFL draft?
Sure, there’s drama involved, but we don’t get to see any of it. The teams work the phones in their war rooms and emerge every once in awhile to give the rest of us an update or a pick.
It would be like watching a game from outside of a stadium and getting reports once every few minutes. That wouldn’t make for great TV.
But that’s what we get with the NFL draft. Plenty of action, but little of it in the open.
That’s why I think, after we look back on the decision after a few years of evidence, the prime-time draft will not be the most beneficial for the league.
When we find out the ratings this morning, they could be strong. This is, after all, the first year for Thursday night draft coverage.
But there’s just too much else going on during a weeknight to be able to sit and watch. The kids have activities. The spouse wants to watch a favorite television show.
It’s just too easy to flip to something else during the down time and miss something.
Change always takes some getting used to, and this is no different. Perhaps in a few years this will seem like one of the league’s great ideas.
But I don’t know that there’s enough live drama to make it last on Thursday nights.
