Former Ohio State hoops recruit now looking at Flyers

Cleveland Benedictine’s Wright lost a scholarship offer from Ohio State, opening the door for UD.

DAYTON — Cameron Wright, a highly regarded basketball prospect in the 2010 class, learned in April that Ohio State had reneged on a scholarship offer 18 months after he committed to the school. But the Cleveland Benedictine High School shooting guard said he has no hard feelings about that elbow to the chops.

“It’s in the past. I’m way over that. God has a plan,” he said.

What may have helped soften the blow for Wright is that he’s discovered he’s a much-coveted recruit again. He’s got scholarship offers from Wisconsin and Indiana, and he visited Notre Dame on Friday, June 12.

He also made an unofficial visit to Dayton last weekend, and the 6-foot-5 senior-to-be is giving the Flyers serious consideration.

“Just getting down there seeing Dayton, I was really impressed,” he said. “I wasn’t really expecting the quality of facilities like what I saw. It was a big shock.

“I already know (senior guard) Marcus Johnson. As far as the coaching staff, everybody seems like really good people. The relationship could really grow if I go to Dayton.”

Wright was a first-team Division II All-Ohio pick, averaging 20 points, seven rebounds and five assists. He intends to make his college choice before the basketball season begins, and among the other factors working in Dayton’s favor is Wright’s close friendship with Flyer recruit Juwan Staten and the prospect of immediate playing time.

UD has four senior guards who will need to be replaced and is planning to bring in just two other backcourt players with Staten in the 2010 class. Chicago native Brandon Spearman, a 6-3 guard who is ranked as the 71st best prospect nationally by Rivals.com, also visited UD last weekend.

“When I get to college, I want to definitely be a big part of the success. I want to play,” Wright said. “I don’t want to go anywhere and sit on the bench. That’s not me.”

Noll, McVay, and Fonts all coached/played for UD, AT THE SAME TIME. Yeah, we're a mid-major, so what!

amy katz - And your point is? A head coach has to think about what's best for his program, not some kid's feelings. It's tough, but that's the way it is.

ncaa violations - "And I suppose those hundreds of ncaa violations by the football team are inaccurate as well. "

Where are you getting that crap? That's just wishful thinking on your part. Pure jealousy.

OSU Joe! You have computer access again! I thought your social worker took it away from you. Joe, "mid-major" is losing to Siena 70 miles away from home, when you had no business being in the tourney in the first place. Get off of the computer, QUIT POSTING IGNORANT CRAP, and keep choking on that embarassing first-round loss. Only a complete idiot would keep coming back here...you add NOTHING and you are not welcome.

I think UD should hold one of the 5 scholarships for the following season. Its tough ehough to integrate 4 guys into a system let alone 5. Bringing in 4 scholarship players means at least 2 in most programs will see meaningful minutes. As good as some frosh are, its tough if you have to rely on them.
