The University of Dayton women’s basketball team hopes to bolster its postseason tournament hopes and gain some national recognition when it hosts sixth-ranked Xavier at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 17.
But the Flyers know some good will come from the game regardless of the outcome.
UD is donating all revenue from ticket sales to the Red Cross to help victims in earthquake-stricken Haiti. The team has had T-shirts made to show their support and also will be selling those to help the cause.
“Obviously, it’s a terrible tragedy and we’d all like to help,” UD coach Jim Jabir said.
“This is a forum where we can do some good, so why not? Sometimes you feel powerless with something like this, but we felt here’s a little money we can send.”
Jabir got the idea for the charitable effort after learning that one of his former players, Karah Cloxton, was planning to go to Haiti in March with Score International as a medical missionary.
He decided not only to provide some financial support for Cloxton, who is in her second year at the Marshall University School of Medicine, but also to get his team involved.
