DAYTON — It may have been the best encore since the Doors’ 1968 performance at the Hollywood Bowl.
Four days after Senior Day against St. Louis, the University of Dayton’s women’s basketball seniors took one last bow with an 83-54 win over rival Xavier on Wednesday night at UD Arena.
“It was kind of exciting; it was another night to celebrate,” senior Patrice Lalor said after scoring 13 points and dishing out seven assists as the Flyers improved to 19-6 overall and 11-2 in the Atlantic 10. “It is a great rivalry and it is great to be able to beat them both times — to beat them by 29 is even better.”
The season sweep of Xavier (7-19, 4-9) is the first for the Flyers since the 2007-08 season, and it was tip-to-buzzer domination.
Senior Justine Raterman got the Flyers rolling with a 3-pointer on the first possession and followed with a reverse layup as the Flyers jumped to a 5-2 lead. Xavier came back to tie at 6-all, forcing Flyers coach Jim Jabir to call two straight timeouts. “We weren’t running things the right way and we were forcing shots,” Jabir said. “We just didn’t have energy on the floor.”
Dayton went on a 15-0 run to push the lead to 21-6, and Xavier never got the deficit back to single digits. The Flyers wasted no time putting the game away, opening the second half with a 21-3 run to push the lead to 63-25 on a basket by Kayla Moses with 13:07 left.
“That was nice,” Jabir said. “We tend to coast at times and it was important for us to come out and keep the hammer down.”
Raterman, who was in a self-described shooting slump, kept the lead at 38 (72-34) when she drained a 3-pointer with 7:52 left before leaving Blackburn Court for the last time with a game-high 25 points.
“I worked on getting my shot back,” Raterman said after hitting 10-of-17 from the floor, including 4-of-7 from beyond the arc. “I was thinking about it too much and I decided I have two games to go and I was just going to go out and shoot it because I know I can shoot it.”
The Flyers held Xavier to 20 percent from long distance while outrebounding the Musketeers 47-25 and forcing 22 turnovers.
