University of Dayton junior baseball player Brian Blasik was named the Atlantic 10 player of the week for the week of April 4-10.
The Valley View High School graduate guided the Flyers to a 2-1 series victory at the University of Massachusetts with a .500 batting average, nine hits, five RBIs and three stolen bases.
Blasik’s week was highlighted on April 9 when he had a season-high four hits including his second home run of the year and three runs scored from the lead-off position in an 8-6 win. He followed that game with a 3-for-5 performance in the series finale with a double and three RBIs in a 6-4 win.
The A-10 weekly honor is a first for the Flyers this season and a first for Blasik’s career.
Baseball
• Urbana University freshman Jake Gibson (Carlisle) earned his first win of the season on April 7 by leading the Blue Knights to a win in the second of two games against Kentucky State.
Gibson (1-4) struck out eight in five innings of work for the win. For the season, he has a 4.25 ERA with 27 strikeouts.
• Freshman Cody Ridinger (Monroe) is one of five Urbana players to start all 33 games so far this season.
Ridinger is batting .275 (29-for-104) with six doubles, two triples, 16 RBIs and 13 runs scored. He also has five stolen bases.
• Earlham College sophomore Andy McCoppin (Madison) had a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth inning on April 3 to lift his team to an 8-7 victory over Rose-Hulman.
Softball
• Thomas More College freshman Stefaney Turner (Carlisle) went 4-for-8 with four RBIs in two games on April 10 to improve her team-leading batting average to .400 (32-for-80).
In 25 games, Turner also has a team-high 10 doubles, as well as 17 RBIs and 18 runs scored.
Women’s track
• Sophomore Emily Amburgey (Preble Shawnee) placed second in the high jump and sixth in the long jump to help Ohio Wesleyan finish third on April 9 in the Marv Frye Invitational.
• Junior Cassie Mattia (Fenwick) won the 800-meter race in 2:19.41 on April 8 at the Don Frall Invitational at Marietta College.
