With unemployment at a high level in Ohio, more volunteers than ever are needed to help the Ohio Division of Wildlife and Farmers and Hunters Feeding the Hungry in the annual drive to process and provide venison to needy families.
The Division of Wildlife has donated $100,000 to FHFH to help pay the processing fees on donated venison. The grant money is to be matched with funds generated or collected by FHFH. Now they need volunteers to help coordinate the effort in many parts of Ohio.
“I became the first Ohio local FHFH coordinator in 2002 and since then the number of chapters has risen to 27,” said Allen Dunlap, Northwest Ohio FHFH. “Our volunteer organization can still use help since a large part of the state is without coordinators or meat processors.”
Anyone wishing to participate can visit fhfh.org and contact one of the listed coordinators or call (866) 438-3434.
Big, big bass
The record many bass anglers thought would never be equaled or broken apparently was tied in July when Manabu Kurita, 32, of Aichi, Japan, pulled in a 22-pound, 4-ounce largemouth bass.
Documentation recently arrived at the International Game Fish Association for world record recognition. That organization, based in Florida, is checking and considering the huge fish caught at Lake Biwa, a Japanese reservoir northeast of Kyoto.
The fish happens to have the exact same weight as the current record-holder, George Perry, who caught his bass at Georgia’s Montgomery Lake on June 2, 1932.
Blinds ready
All handicapped or youth hunters have the opportunity to hunt from special blinds constructed at the Spring Valley and Clark Lake wildlife areas.
The blinds, one at each area, are accessible to handicapped hunters in pursuit of waterfowl.
To take advantage of either location, contact the Spring Valley Wildlife Area office at (937) 488-3115 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. on weekdays.
New check station
The Division of Wildlife has added a check station for this year’s deer and turkey hunting seasons, starting with deer archery season on Saturday, Sept. 26. It will be at Deb’s Place, 5016 Old U.S. 35 E, Jamestown. Hours of operation are 8:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., Monday-Saturday and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday. The phone number is (937) 673-5344.
