BELLBROOK — Besides the weather, also casting a chill on the Dayton Dutch Lions’ season opener Saturday night at Bellbrook High School was the opponent.
Defending United Soccer League Second Division champion Charlotte notched a goal just over a minute into the second half and held on for a 2-1 victory in a steady, blowing, light rain.
“The first half wasn’t soccer, it was just kicking. With the wind and rain, we couldn’t play the soccer we wanted to play,” Dutch Lion coach Ivar van Dinteren said. “I saw some good things for us only having been together for three weeks.”
The Lions got on the board at the 64:19 mark when Kolby LaCrone beat former Chicago Fire keeper Andrew Dykstra to a loose ball in front of the net and drilled it home from 15 yards out to trim the deficit to 2-1.
The Dutch Lions went into the intermission knotted with the Battery at 0-0 despite being out-shot 4-0 in the first 45 minutes. For the match, Charlotte outshot Dayton 11-4. Dutch Lions keeper Brian Visser recorded six saves.
