Kendall Griffin is continuing his summer AAU basketball schedule with the Spiece Select 2011, which included a trip on Wednesday, July 21, to a tournament in Kansas City, Mo.
“Next it’s football two-a-days,” the 6-foot-5 guard said with a laugh. “Great.”
The incoming senior at Avon (Ind.) High School will then move from wide receiver to his fourth season as a varsity basketball starter, and he has now decided on his future beyond high school.
Griffin informed Wright State basketball coach Billy Donlon on Wednesday that he’ll accept a scholarship and play for the Raiders beginning with the 2011-12 season, becoming the first WSU recruit in the Class of 2011 to commit to the school. He chose the Raiders over Belmont, and he said he also had offers from Indiana-Purdue-Fort Wayne, Evansville, Eastern Kentucky and Florida-Gulf Coast.
Griffin, a three-time All-Hoosier Crossroads Conference selection, has averaged between 10.2 and 13.3 points during his three-year career and is also ranked in the top 10 of his high school class.
“He’s also our hardest worker,” said Avon boys basketball coach Jason Young. “Just an all-around great kid.”
Griffin said he liked WSU’s facilities, coaching staff and proximity to his home town (Avon is a suburb west of Indianapolis). He said he’ll be expounding on those benefits to AAU teammate Alex Pritchett, a 6-8 power forward from Bedford (Ind.) North Lawrence High School, who is also being recruited by the Raiders.
In Griffin, the Raiders landed an experienced guard and gifted athlete who would be a Division I recruit at receiver and always guards the opposing team’s best player, Young said.
“I found everything I was looking for,” Griffin said. “I knew what I wanted, so it was the right time for me to make my choice.”
