FAIRBORN — Chrishawn Hopkins, a 6-foot-1 guard from Indianapolis Manual High School, said Wednesday, Aug. 5, Wright State is definitely on his list that includes Butler, Miami University, Southern Illinois, Cincinnati and possibly Virginia.
“I am interested in Wright State,” said Hopkins, echoing a Web site post on Indystar.com. “I liked Wright State because the coaching staff tried to build a relationship with me.”
Wright State already has one verbal commitment for next year from Keegan Clark, a 6-4 guard from Jeffersonville, Ind.
Hopkins said not many schools showed an interest in him before this year, and for a variety of reasons. He wasn’t a good student as a freshman and sophomore, and didn’t play much, then went to Las Vegas for eight months to live with his father.
“I worked hard over the last couple of years,” said Hopkins, mentioning his school work as well as his basketball game, featuring the ability to pass and get to the basket. “I knew what was coming when I went to high school. I developed bad habits in middle school.”
Hopkins said his grade-point average has been 3.2 since last year, when he moved back to Indianapolis to live with his mom and his family.
He arrived in time to play in seven games for Manual — where the famed Indiana stars Tom and Dick Van Arsdale played in the late 1950s before going on to IU and the pros — averaging 17.3 points per game.
This summer, Hopkins played for the AAU Bloomington Blaze, intriguing more recruiters.
