Kameron Woods was cut from his middle school basketball team. He was cut from AAU teams. Just recently, he started playing regularly for Eastern High School in Louisville, Ky.
“Now I finally have some confidence,” Woods said. “I feel like I’m really improving.”
That’s why Wright State, as well as other schools, has increased its interest in the 6-foot-8 forward in the past few weeks after his performances with the Louisville-based BA Hoyas on the AAU circuit. And he’s not even the only one from his high school WSU is talking with, as guard Remy Abell has a scholarship offer from the Raiders.
The Eastern High School pair has discussed what they might look like both wearing Wright State uniforms.
“Yeah, we talk to each other about Wright State, about possibly going there,” Woods said.
While Abell has been on the WSU radar for some time, Woods is newer.
“The only negative thing about Kameron is his weight,” said BA Hoyas coach Eric Browning about the 180-pounder. “But he probably has more potential than any player in the state of Kentucky.”
Woods said that he has talked with WSU more than any other school recruiting him (he has scholarship offers from Eastern Kentucky and James Madison), and Abell said the Raiders are also still in his mix of interested programs.
“We’ve been in the gym and kind of mentioned it,” Abell said of possibly going to the same college. “I’m just trying to take things slow.”
Back on the market: Vinny Zollo, a 6-8 center from George Rogers Clark High School in Winchester, Ky., committed to Kentucky early in high school while coach Billy Gillispie was still at the UK helm.
Now heading into his senior season, Zollo has Wright State high on his recruiting list. He said he has received offers from Wright State and Miami University and has taken an official visit to Butler. He also said he’s being recruiting “pretty hard” by Dayton.
High potential: Jared Bryant has helped Cincinnati Roger Bacon High School to a 39-10 record in the past two seasons, and Spartans coach Brian Neal said the 6-8 forward/center is on the verge of major-level attention if he continues to improve.
Bryant visited WSU last month and is mulling an offer from the Raiders, and he could be a significant addition if interest from the six power conferences doesn’t materialize, Neal said.
“The guys were great, and it seemed like they were all players I could really get along with and bond with,” Bryant said. “And I really liked the coaches, too. Everything was nice.”
