About the Raiders
This is WSU’s fourth consecutive game away from the Nutter Center, and the previous three have been losses to Richmond (71-61), Southern Illinois (56-50) and Cincinnati (77-69). ... Vaughn Duggins is tied with Wisconsin-Green Bay’s Rahmon Fletcher as the league’s No. 3 scorer, and he notched 18 points against UC on Wednesday. ... The Raiders rank 12th nationally in fewest turnovers per game (10.3) and 16th in turnover margin (plus-6.3 per game). They’re also in the top 100 in scoring defense (No. 76 at 61.8 points per game). ... With the three senior guards far and away the leading scorers, WSU hopes it can get more contributions from the bench. Matt Vest (8 ppg), who started three games in Evans’ absence, and Armond Battle (4.1) have been best in that category. ... Johann Mpondo leads the Raiders in rebounding at 4.1 per game.
About the Titans
Detroit already boasted one of the league’s best big men in Eli Holman (who averages a double-double with 11.5 rebounds) before it added Ray McCallum, son of coach Ray McCallum Sr. and a McDonald’s All-American. McCallum Jr. has started all eight games and is second on the team in rebounding (5.1). ... Only one nonstarter, Donavan Foster (21.8 mpg, 6.3 ppg) averages more than 13 minutes per game. ... The Titans opened with losses against New Mexico and Syracuse for a tough early schedule.
FYI
This is the Horizon League opener for both teams. Detroit was picked to finish second in the league, and Wright State was chosen sixth in the preseason poll.
Quote
“I have a hard time playing a conference game the (first weekend in December). I understand why we have to do it, for BracketBusters, BracketBusters is a good thing. I would prefer, though, for all of our league games to come after the first of the year. But, we’re playing the game, Detroit’s very, very good, to go there on the road ... we should be pretty well road-tested.” — WSU coach Billy Donlon.
