About Wright State
The Raiders set program records for fewest points in a half and in a game in a 55-34 defeat against Air Force on Wednesday, so the Raiders are reeling offensively. Darling led WSU in scoring against the Falcons, with seven points, and Mays, the only Raider with a double-digit scoring average, had six points and four rebounds. Again in foul trouble that limited his minutes, freshman forward Tavares Sledge was productive with five points and seven rebounds in 18 minutes, but he is averaging only 12.2 minutes per game. The Raiders average 55.7 points per game while shooting 37.2 percent from the field. Nine players have started games this season.
About Miami
The RedHawks have lost three straight to Southeast Missouri State, Cincinnati and Troy, and they will play at home for the first time since their opener, a 72-67 overtime defeat of Dayton on Nov. 15. Mavunga surpassed 1,000 career points against Cincinnati, becoming the 34th player in Miami history to do so. He ranks 11th nationally in scoring and also averages 9.8 rebounds per game, 28th nationally. Bill Edwards Jr., a sophomore transfer from Penn State and the son of Wright State all-time leading scorer and rebounder Bill Edwards, is second on the team in scoring (7.8 ppg). Miami is among the country’s worst in turnover margin (minus-4.0) but ranks 49th in free-throw percentage (73.7).
FYI
The WSU-Miami series is tied 3-3 in the past six meetings, and three of those games have been decided by one point. Wright State won 66-51 last season.
Quote, unquote
“Coaches will tell you, when you’re trying to form your team and get better, these kinds of games (nearby rivals) can propel you into a different light. I’m sure we’ll both be fighting like crazy.” — Miami coach Charlie Coles.
