Raiders train Special Olympians

Hot Topics

By Marc Katz, Staff Writer 2:08 AM Wednesday, October 14, 2009

Wright State’s men’s and women’s swimming teams do more in the fall than just train for their own meets.

For three consecutive Saturdays, they also train Special Olympians for the Area 2 Swimming Meet, which was held Friday, Oct. 9, with about 100 Special Olympic swimmers in attendance.

“The Special Olympics of Greater Dayton host it,” said Sion Brinn, WSU’s coach, “and our med students are also involved. It’s quite a rewarding experience for us.”

Wright State has hosted the event for 21 years, and Brinn said some of the swimmers look forward to working again with the WSU swimmers who have helped them in the past. The Raiders swim their next meet Oct. 22, hosting UW-Green Bay.

Horizon network to broadcast WSU soccer

Don’t let the 5-2 loss at Western Michigan turn you off on this year’s men’s soccer team. In fact, turn it on when the Raiders are at Loyola at 8 p.m. Saturday. The Horizon League Network will have it online at www.horizonleaguenetwork.tv.

Streaking

The women’s volleyball team has won two straight and hosts Cleveland State on Friday at 7 p.m. A victory would push the Raiders to .500 at 11-11. Cleveland State is the Horizon League’s co-leader.

Assistant coach hired

Annie Voyles has been hired as an assistant softball coach by new head coach Linda Garza.

Voyles has been an assistant at Presbyterian College in Clinton, S.C. She played at Florida Gulf Coast University, then Florida Atlantic University, first as a pitcher, then as a catcher.

When Voyles hurt her arm, she converted to another position and was an all-star at both.

Sold out trip

On the basketball front, the fan trip to Chicago for the men’s games with Loyola and UIC over New Year’s has been sold out. ... Don’t forget the Halloween Hoops for both men’s and women’s basketball Oct. 29 at 6 p.m. One word: free candy. ... The preseason luncheon is Nov. 9 at the Nutter Center’s Berry Room. ESPN’s Mark Adams will be the featured speaker. Lunch begins at 11:30 a.m. at a cost of $15.
