FAIRBORN — The game’s last possession went like many of the rest: high-energy and long.
Cleveland State senior guard Jeremy Montgomery dribbled near the top of the key with the game against Wright State tied 43-43 and the shot clock off. The Raiders were trying to force overtime against the team considered the best in the early Horizon League season.
Montgomery drove left and missed a short shot. CSU senior guard D’Aundray Brown came in from the right side, tipped the ball in with what was later determined to be 0.3 seconds left and secured a 45-43 Cleveland State victory in the HL opener for both teams in front of 3,349 at the Nutter Center on Thursday night.
“We guarded them really well like we did all night,” WSU sophomore Matt Vest said. “It was just kind of a tough play.”
It was a tough night all around offensively, as the teams saw limited possessions. CSU’s Tim Kamczyc was the only double-figure scorer, with 12 points.
A.J. Pacher led Wright State (2-5, 0-1) with nine points, as the Raiders shot 41 percent. Cleveland State (7-1, 1-0) shot 40 percent, including four layups in the final minutes.
The game was tied 21-21 at halftime, and the lead changed four times in the final 3:17. A Cole Darling free throw for WSU tied the game 43-43 with 1:06 left, and after a CSU miss and an over-and-back call on WSU, Cleveland State took possession with 27.1 seconds left.
“That’s an experienced, hungry team that plays through the rebound,” said WSU coach Billy Donlon. “You make them miss the first shot, an off-balance shot by Montgomery, and we’re watching, and they’re playing.”
