FAIRBORN — If the Wright State men’s basketball team had played on Wednesday, leading scorer Julius Mays would not have been on the court.

The Raiders are hoping things improve for Saturday’s game at Detroit.

Mays, a junior guard, has not practiced this week while trying to recover from a strain to his left Achilles tendon and calf suffered in a Jan. 8 game against Valparaiso. He was limited in losses last week against Wisconsin-Milwaukee and UW-Green Bay, and he was wearing a protective walking boot on his left foot Wednesday.

“I was fine pretty much in the first half,” Mays said of Saturday’s 57-56 loss to Green Bay, during which he scored 15 points with four rebounds, three steals and two assists.

“In the second half I pushed off it one time a little more than what I had been doing, and it just locked up on me real bad.”

Mays, who leads the team in points (13.4), assists (2.7), minutes (32.5) and 3-point percentage (42.6), scored just three points Thursday in a blowout loss to Milwaukee. He said he felt better Saturday, when Wright State took a 17-point lead in the second half before losing to Green Bay, but he left the game briefly in the second half and was limited in his return.

“(When it’s hurt) it won’t get loose, and it doesn’t feel like your foot can really bend up or down,” Mays said. “It’s stuck in one spot.”

WSU coach Billy Donlon said the staff considered holding Mays out on Saturday, but Mays felt better during warmups.

“Certainly later in the second half he needed to come out,” Donlon said, “and I think it has affected him since we’ve come back.”
