Beginning today, July 1, The University of Dayton Marian Library — located on the top floor of Roesch Library — is featuring an exhibition, "Art of Illustration," showcasing the work of visual artist Anne Simoneau of Michigan.
Simoneau, who studied at the Columbus College of Art and Design, uses pastels, ink on paper and computer-generated images in her work.
The Rev. Johann Roten, director of the University of Dayton's Marian Library, praised Simoneau's passion and ingenuity.
"The exhibit's signature piece, 'Monk Praying in Church,' appears, at first glance, like a depiction of the angel Gabriel announcing to Mary that she will give birth to Jesus," Roten said. "However, the illustration is of a monk reading a book in the presence of the Holy Spirit. Simoneau inspires the viewer, just as the Holy Spirit inspires the monk and inspires us."
The Marian Library has arranged the exhibit as a series of clusters, including Mary, the Eucharist, Jesus, the saints and children/families at prayer.
"She (Simoneau) is very good at taking one scene and presenting it in different ways," Roten said. "She brings to visualization different versions of the same thing, by different means. It's a very profound and unusual approach to religious-themed art."
The exhibit is free and will be open 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday through Sept. 5. For more information call (937) 229-4214.
