BEAVERCREEK — Vampires aren't seen during daylight hours, likely because of the popular belief that sunlight will cause them to burst into flame.
But there were plenty of vampire faithful at the Cinema de lux at The Greene Friday afternoon to catch the first showings of "Twilight," a film based on a series of teen novels by Stephenie Meyers.
The theater had a crowd for the 12:01 a.m. showing Thursday, but by the 1 p.m. screening many viewers hoped to avoid the large gaggle of teens expected to pack the house over the weekend.
"We skipped out on the last half day of work and came to avoid too rowdy of a crowd," said Misty Sayre, who came with her friend Cathy Wasson.
Both were drawn to the books and film because it's a story of unrequited love.
"That eternal story of two people who want each other, but can't be together," Wasson said.
Katie Burianek, a Fairmont senior, came to the matinee for similar reasons. Her day ends after fourth period Fridays so Burianek wasn't playing hooky, but she expected some of her friends were cutting class to see the film.
"A lot of them saw it last night," she said. "I thought it would be less crowded then tonight. I've read the four books in two weeks. It's romance, with a twist."
Afternoon showings were selling out, according to local radio broadcasts, and even larger crowds were expected later, after dark.
