KETTERING — All week commercials ran on Miami Valley television hyping the appearance of the Backstreet Boys at the Fraze Pavillion

They lauded the 1990s boy band as having "changed pop culture."

All week I vowed that I would make the Fraze and the Backstreet Boys pay for that overblown claim.

While I am not willing to say they changed pop culture, they did put on a really good show. On Saturday, Aug. 9, the Fraze was filled with fans of all ages, from young girls to men with thinning, white hair. The group has been around for 15 years, with a CD released as recently as October after years dominating the charts in the 1990s, but still the span of the crowd's ages was surprising.

Teenagers, who had to be in elementary school during the Backstreet Boys' heydey, screamed and squealed when one of the members ran backstage before the show. Their screaming didn't end until the 105 minute show ended.

They are a dramatic group, those Boys. They held the long notes long, touched hands with fans in the front row and wiped their sweaty brows with aplomb.

Their opening song, "Larger than Life," featured Nick Carter, Howie Dorough, Brian Littrell and A.J. McLean as prize fighters duking it out in a ring.

The group, known for its harmony, were in good voice, especially Littrell, but it was their dancing that stood out. Their intensely choreographed, almost regimented moves thrilled the audience. Sometimes it was unintentionally funny (that means you, Nick Carter), but it was always energetic.

"Quit Playing Games with My Heart" and "As Long as You Love Me" slowed things down, then an extra-bouncy "(Everybody) Backstreet's Back" closed the show.

Girlicious, a group put together from a reality show, opened the night and was disappointing. The women, barely out of their teens, were dressed in tight, spangled clothing, making them look like real-life Bratz dolls. It didn't help that they were not announced and seemed to startle the audience as a result.

The 8 hour drive from Milwaukee was totally worth it! I’ve seen them over 20 times now.. from their first US tour to their height of popularity.. and now. I have to say this was by far my favorite show. I was interested to see their show scaled down, and I feel like just the 4 of them & us is all we will ever need. They are great enough entertainers that they do not need the flash to keep us attentive or awed. I loved that the concert mirrored my first BSB show ten years ago… including solos!

Almost 10 years to the date my sister and I relived our first Backstreet Boy concert. The show was great! Not so sure about Girlicious, but our friend really liked them. This was my 3rd BSB concert, and I would go 3 more times.

I cant believe I actually was there to enjoy all the excitment! I loved every minute of it. And cant wait to see them again!! I dont know why everyone hates on them.. This was by far one of the Best show’s ever aside from the Girlicious crap, I have been a fan of the Backstreet Boys since the beginning and will be for the rest of my life they came to the Fraze on my 21st Birthday and it was the Best Birthday of my life. I sang, danced and jumped up and down all night and I am even Pregnant with my Husband and I’s first child but I loved every minute of it. I know my little girl will love them too they are back and really are better than ever.

This was my 5th Backstreet Boys concert and it may have been one of the best ones! This was my first time being so close to them so that may have helped, but the concert rocked and they still got it! I can’t wait for Aj to drop his album! KTBSPA!

I LOVED the show!! This is my fourth time seeing Backstreet Boys, and they always deliver. I truly liked Girlicious too…they were great dancers and their outfits were cute (Although revealing, but I expected as much coming from Pussycat Dolls creator.) Their music is something I can (and will, when the CD comes out) work out and dance to. My only complaint of the show was the ridiculously overpriced merchandise ($85 for a sweatshirt?! I can make it myself. I’ll pass.) I had a great time!

This was my 7th BSB concert & they are still the best! They get better each time I see them. They really know how to captivate the audience. Everytime I see them I think it will be my last time. I hope this one isn’t the last because they are absolutely amazing! BSB forever!!!!

What do you expect from a group that is created on the premise of being fake? These people didn’t even like each other two months ago, we know based on the show that 3/4 of them can’t even hit a note properly and only one of them actually has dance training. They are girls that will last until their butts start to inflate and their boobs start to sag and that’s about all we can expect from the real life Bratz dolls. Too bad no one told them to prepare for their soon to be sad retirement.

We both thought the show was AWESOME. We liked girlicious, but like the review above us.. we were startled when the came out at first. It was cool that BSB waved at us, and they had strong contact with the crowd. which is a good thing to have. They were also pretty funny. AJs dance moves were the BOMB! lol.

Backstreet put on a great show. However their opening act Girlicious was a BIG JOKE. The only thing live about the girls’ performance was the poor dancing and talking. They did not sing live they lipsyncked.
