C-J senior wins state poetry recital

DAYTON — Next stop is Washington, D.C., for Chaminade-Julienne High School senior Rachel Chandler, Ohio's state champion in the 2008 "Poetry Out Loud" recitation contest.
She bested 22 other candidates from high schools around the state in the finals March 15 at Ohio Dominican College in Columbus.

The nationals will be April 29 at George Washington University.
Chandler, who will attend Central Connecticut University on a full basketball scholarship in the fall, said she couldn't help noticing how tough the competition was while waiting to go on in Columbus.
She opened with "Writ on the Steps of Puerto Rican Harlem," by Gregory Corso, following with Martin Espada's "Alabanza: In Memory of Local 100," a tribute fo 43 kitchen workers who died in the World Trade Center attack, and Marie Ponsot's "Winter."
For winning state, she received $300 and an all-expenses-paid trip to the nationals. Chaminade-Julienne High School received a $500 stipend to purchase poetry books. Sponsors include the National Endowment for the Arts, the Poetry Foundation and the Ohio Arts Council.
