ON stage

An inside scoop on new Dayton theater hall of famers

By Terry Morris

Staff Writer

Friday, August 15, 2008

Many to most who attend the annual DayTony Awards Sunday, Aug. 17, have seen or performed with Dodie Lockwood and/or Jim Lockwood in one or many plays or musicals over the past three decades.

That doesn't mean they know the real Dodie and Jim, who may have gotten divorced from each other a few years ago, but haven't slipped the knot that binds them to the stage. They have their priorities straight.

We have the true inside information on the two, who will be this year's Dayton Theatre Hall of Fame inductees at the banquet. It comes courtesy of their son Jake, who like his sister Jennifer, grew up in the perhaps the Dayton area's most theater-crazed family and went — surprise — into the family "business."

Since it's 2008, here are eight things about each of them you may not have known before:

DODIE

— Was featured in "Who's Who in Baton Twirling" in the early '60s.

— Was Miss Belmont Park in High School

— Collects teapots, pineapples and suns.

— Has a cat named for her favorite character, Amanda from "The Glass Menagerie."

— Is selling her house. That's right, you could own a piece of Dayton theater history.

— Taught dance after high school.

— Hates "stinky" candles.

— Is known by the alias "Nana" when grandchildren are present.

JIM

— Performed magic on the streets of Detroit to make money as a teenager.

— Played French horn in the U.S. Air Force Band.

— Played French horn for Queen Elizabeth, JFK's inauguration, and the ground-breaking ceremony for Wright State University.

— Hates asparagus.

— Collects elephants.

— Is the proud owner of a laser disc player.

— Has been a Disney fanatic for years and has visited the Orlando resort over 25 times.

— Answers to "Grandpoo" when grandchildren are around.

Jake offers further evidence that his family has always has its priorities in order.

"In the fourth grade, I was attending St. Peter's Catholic School in Huber Heights and we came to the conclusion that I would not be able to participate as an altar boy," he said. "The problem was that I would have to miss either altar boy duty or Sunday tech rehearsals at the Dayton Playhouse, and it would be best to just not take on the additional commitment at church. As a result, I was the only boy in my fourth grade class that was not an altar boy."
