Scaramucci to Colbert: 'I thought I was going to last longer than a carton of milk'

The Mooch came prepared.

Anthony Scaramucci, the infamous former White House communications director with just an 11-day tenure, appeared on "The Late Show With Stephen Colbert" on Tuesday night, and, as promised, he brought a knife to the set (in a sealed box for safety).

But while the former Trump staffer seemed to enjoy his time on the late-night show, much of their conversation was contentious, especially when Colbert asked about the weekend's events in Charlottesville, Va., and Trump's tempered response.

»  Who is Anthony Scaramucci, the new White House communications director?

Scaramucci had no trouble condemning Nazis when Colbert prompted him, but when asked why it took Trump so long to do so, the Mooch didn't have a satisfactory answer.

After claiming that Trump was a "compassionate person" who gave up his "luxurious lifestyle" for the presidency, Scaramucci said, "I think there's a counter-intuitive thing as (it) relates to the media. The media expects him to do something; sometimes he does the opposite."

Colbert, however, did not relent.

After noting Trump finally condemned hate groups two days later, Colbert asked, "Did he order his spine on Amazon Prime?"

Scaramucci responded: "That's a good line. I said yesterday that he should've been tougher on it. ... Only he can really answer that question."

The Mooch also talked about his very short tenure at the White House, and the culture within the administration.

"It's a tough place, there was infighting," he said. "I have a tendency to be very open ... they go behind each others' back and leak things to the press. ... Whatever you think about me, I was very open about how I felt about (people)."

He added later, "when you take a job like that, Stephen, you know your expiration date is coming. I didn't think I was going to last too long, but I thought I was going to last longer than a carton of milk."

Scaramucci was fired from the White House shortly after "The New Yorker" published a phone interview in which he let loose profanities and threats, some of them aimed then-White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus (quickly fired), adviser Steve Bannon (still there), and the entire White House communications staff (some departed).

The Mooch didn't step back from his claim that Bannon was leaking to the press, and said, "If it were up to me, he would be gone. But it's not up to me."
