Rick Tempesta has been a comedian since the early 1980s, but he’s done plenty of other things in his life, from serving a two-year stint in the Army and playing junior college basketball to working as assistant director on the NBC drama “SeaQuest DSV.”

Now, in his early 50s, Tempesta has taken on another role — that of Mr. Mom. When he isn’t on the road, he spends his days at home with his 13-month-old son, Preston.

“It’s different, that’s for sure, but it’s going great,” Tempesta said. “He’s a lot of fun. He’s a great little baby. He’s happy all the time and always smiling, but you know babies, they’ve got a little mind of their own. When he wants something, he wants it now.”

“Just watching him grow and develop is amazing,” he added. “He’s a little character.”

Tempesta, a native of Warren, Ohio, has been living in Columbus since 2002, where he works for the local Funny Bone Comedy Club.

“They asked if I was interested in coming here and house emceeing, doing fill-in work and taking over the open mike program,” he said. “So now I travel very little compared to what I used to. I used to be out months at a time. I’m not making a killing, but it keeps me in town and I’ve got some income coming in.”

This weekend, Tempesta is out for some rare road dates. He performs Friday through Sunday, July 3-5, at the Funny Bone at The Greene.

“It’s the July Fourth weekend, so come in and see some comedy instead of blowing off your fingers,” he said. “Save that for Sunday. Besides, in this economy people need to come out and laugh.

“My show is adult,” Tempesta added. “It’s observational — I just talk about life. It’s dry and brutally honest. It’s kind of like a James Bond martini — it’s dry and shaken, not stirred.”
