DAYTON — The 17th annual Realizing Ethnic Awareness and Cultural Heritage Across Dayton (REACH Across Dayton) conference at Sinclair Community College will take place from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Feb. 26.
The annual event is aimed at promoting the advancement of cross-cultural understanding and education between African American, Appalachian, Latino, Native American and other ethnic communities in the Miami Valley. Similarities and differences of those cultures are highlighted through the presentation of the beliefs, traditions and arts central to them.
This year’s conference, titled “In the Spirit of Going Home” will kick off with a keynote address by artist Eduardo de Soignie. A former citizen of socialist Cuba, Soignie first experienced life in the United States at the age of 18, and will speak to his experiences in crossing cultural and racial lines to discover his true “home.”
A panel on “The Search for Home,” facilitated by local academics, will be followed by a presentation from Cuban multimedia artist Juan-Sí González.
A host of breakout sessions on the art, traditions, media, identity and beliefs of a vast array of cultures across the globe will pack the afternoon. Artists, community leaders, and academics will share their experiences and abilities as they relate to cultural interaction.
“We use the humanities and the arts as a vehicle to bring people together, as a kind of common ground,” said Tess Little, one of the conference’s coordinators.
The conference will end with a performance by the Percussion and World Music Ensemble, led by Lennard Moses, director of percussion and world music at Central State University.
Nearly 300 people attended REACH last year, and Little said attendance has increased at each conference since the first in 1993. “It seems to be something that people are hungry for,” she said. “People say to me, this conference renews my spirit.”
