DAYTON — All four of Donna LaChance’s children first learned to ice skate at downtown Dayton’s RiverScape.

“It’s priced reasonably for families, and it’s a lot of fun,” says LaChance, a McPherson Town mom whose kids are now 17, 16, 14 and 12. “We’ve been going for years.”

Her advice to those who’ve never tried it?

“Just go and have fun. Take advantage of the classes if you’ve never skated.”

The new and improved outdoor skating rink, located under the covered pavilion at RiverScape’s new Phase III area, is about 50 percent larger than the old rink and will open at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 26.

The new MetroParks Ice Rink, which will offer skating lessons and special events throughout the season, will remain open through March 13, extending the skating season from past years. The $5 admission includes the cost of skate rentals, with sizes ranging from pre-school size 8 through women’s size 11 and men’s size 15,

Skyline at the Hub will be open during skating hours, serving coneys as well as chicken snack wraps and seasonal specialties, such as hot chocolate. During the grand-opening weekend, visitors can enjoy holiday music, horse-drawn carriage rides, prize give-aways and more.

Hours for this opening weekend will be:

• Friday, Nov. 26 and Saturday, Nov. 27: 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., with a 30-minute break from
6:30 to 7 p.m.

• Sunday, Nov. 28, 1 to 5:30 p.m.

LaChance says she also belongs to organizations that have rented the rink for private parties. Cost is $200 and includes everything from hot cocoa to skates.

Patrons who bring their own skates can skate for free Mondays through Thursdays when there is no admission to the rink. Rentals are available for $3 on these days. Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays are $5 and include skate rentals.
