Friday was the 41st anniversary of Earth Day but local officials say there are plenty of ways to show you care any day.

“It’s a day to remember the value of the natural world around us so we can value it every day,” said Brooke Bryan, project manager and volunteer coordinator at Glen Helen Ecology Institute.

Things you can do to celebrate the Earth

Appreciate the view

Grab your bike and hit the bike trail or take a hike. Visit the 68 acres around Clifton Gorge in Yellow Springs and marvel at the waterfalls and rapids or stop by the wildflower garden at Cox Arborteum and Gardens MetroPark in Miami Twp., Montgomery County.

Clean this place up

Pick up after other people. Several communities and groups are organizing cleanups all the time.

Go to Market

Visit The PNC 2nd Street Market and pick up fresh, locally grown produce, meat and flowers. The Market, 600 E. Second St. in Dayton, has more than 40 vendors including 11 growers and producers selling everything from cheese to honey. There are also crafts and prepared foods. The market’s weekend hours are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

Lunch with Earth

The Nature Conservancy Worldwide and Meetup.com have teamed up for Picnic for the Planet. The conservation organization is encouraging people to eat outdoors on and around Earth Day. The picnic can be as simple or complex as you want. You can plan it at picnic at meetup.com/natureconservancy . Invite friends and share pictures of your picnic on Twitter, Facebook, Flickr or YouTube by using the tag #picnic11.
