It’s not exactly the Homearama of previous years, but the Home Builders Association of Dayton is poised to introduce some new attractions — including fine foods, fast cars and craft beers — to this year’s home-showcasing event, dubbed “Questival.”
“The Questival is taking the place of Homearama, which is not happening this year,” said Joanie Haverstick, director of special projects for the builders association. “The HBA is hopeful Homearama will return once the economy turns for the better. In the meantime, the HBA wants to keep people excited about new homes and give them an opportunity to see different communities.”
Home tours are still a part of the schedule of events, which kicks off tonight, June 19, with an AleFest and extends through Sunday, June 21, then returns next weekend, June 27-28. Events will be held at Soraya Farms community on Ohio 48 between Social Row Road and Lytle Five Points Road in Clearcreek Twp. in Warren County, and at the Trails of SaddleCreek community located four miles away on Clyo Road just south of Spring Valley Road in Washington Twp., Montgomery County.
Admission to Questival is $5 per person or $10 per carload and is good for both locations on the same day. For a complete schedule of Questival events, go to www.hbadayton.com, but here’s a sampling of what Questival-goers will find:
The 2009 AleFest Questival Kickoff will be a progressive tasting that begins from 5 to 7 p.m. today, June 19, at the CondoFest located at Soraya Farms in Clearcreek Twp., then proceeds to the HomeFest at the Trails of SaddleCreek community in Washington Twp. for the 7 to 9 p.m. portion.
The AleFest features the opportunity to sample 60 different craft beers divided between the two locations. Food for the event will be prepared by chefs David Glynn and Mike Wilhelm. The “Breckenridge Band” will perform at Soraya Farms, and “The Fries” will entertain at the Trails of SaddleCreek.
Admission for the general public is $45. Tickets are available at the door.
Questival organizers are calling this two-part event “a celebration of Dayton’s finest chefs in some of Dayton’s finest homes.” Here’s how it will work: Six or more of the region’s restaurant chefs will face off against one another from 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 20, at the Trailes of SaddleCreek in Round One of the competition. The chefs will compete in an Iron Chef-like competition in which they’ll create a dish from a list of ingredients that will be undisclosed to them until 45 minutes beforehand. The three chefs with the most votes from a panel of judges will then advance to a final cook-off from 2 to 3 p.m. June 27 at Soraya Farms. The finalists will once again create a dish from a “blind basket” of ingredients, and a single “Chef Quest Challenge Winner” will be declared.
Participants will include C’est Tout Chef Dominique Fortin, Cafe Boulevard Chef Rae Rosbough, Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse Chef Jeff Vega, Jay’s Restaurant Chef Justin White, l’Auberge Chef Romy Jung, Rue Dumaine Chef Anne Kearney, and The Caroline Chef Damian Bumgarner.
There also will be “Gourmet Tastings” of samplings from area restaurants on both Saturdays, including:
Throughout both weekends, other events will include car shows with “People’s Choice” awards, live animal appearances, children’s programs, pony rides, the “All American PetFest” and other live entertainment.
The New Home Questival is presented by the Home Builders Association of Dayton in partnership with the Dayton Daily News, WHIO-TV, WMMX 107.7, LITE 99.9, Lexus of Dayton, Humane Society of Greater Dayton and the Miami Valley Restaurant Association. The Home Builders Association is comprised of nearly 500 Builder and Associate members of the home building industry representing 20,000 employees throughout the Montgomery County, Greene County, Darke County, Preble County and the northern portion of Warren County areas.
