DayTony Awards night approaches

Two Dayton actors will be inducted into hall of fame at the annual event, more than 100 others will win awards.

The first two reasons to attend the annual DayTony Awards are actors Gil Martin and Blake Senseman. They will be inducted into the Dayton Theatre Hall of Fame during the Aug. 16 celebration in the Grande Ballroom of the Dayton Marriott Hotel, 1414 S. Patterson Blvd.

There are more than 100 others — all of those who will win awards for the local 2008-9 theater season, as voted on by their peers.

Tickets are $32 and must be reserved by Aug. 1 for black-tie optional event. Cocktails (cash bar) and hors d’oeuvres will be served starting at 6 p.m. The ceremony will begin at 7:30. Call (937) 654-0400.

Bit parts

• Xenia Area Community Theater will have a free summer theater workshop for ages 8 to 14 Aug. 10-14 and 17-20. Besides learning about acting, lights, makeup, costumes, scenery and other roles in the theater, participants will rehearse daily for a closing performance Aug. 21 of “Without Strings,” adapted from Carlo Collodi’s “Pinocchio.” Registration will be Aug. 10 at the theater, 45 E. • Playhouse South and the Miami Valley Symphony Orchestra will renew a previous summer musical theater partnership when they collaborate for a Theatre Under the Stars production of “Kiss Me Kate” at 7:30 p.m.. Aug. 7-9 and 14-16 at the North Park Amphitheatre in Springboro. In years past, the shows were presented in Kettering.

Directors are Dawn Roth Smith and Carrie Thurston. Musical director is John W. Johns. Choreographer is Jill Proudfoot. Admission is free, but donations of at least $5 are encouraged at the door.

• Broadway performer and multiple Tony Award nominee Christine Andreas will perform in a benefit concert for the Middletown Lyric Theatre at 8 p.m. Aug. 15 in Dave Finkelman Auditorium on the campus of Miami University in Middletown. Tickets are $25 at www.middletownlyric.org or (513) 425-7140.

Role call

• The Darke County Center for the Arts will have tryouts for the Missoula Children Theatre’s production of “The Pied Piper” from 10 a.m. to noon Aug. 3 at St. Clair Memorial Hall, 215 W. Fourth St. Students in grades one through 12 are eligible. Performances will be at 3 and 8 p.m. Aug. 8. More information is available at (937) 547-0908 or by email at deca@centerforarts.net.

• Town Hall Theatre, 27 N. Main St., Centerville, will have auditions at 7 p.m. Aug. 5 and 10 for adults and youth cast members of the Landmark Theatre production of “Junie B. Jones.” Performances will be Oct. 23-Nov. 8 under director Brittany Hayden-Hinkle. Registration fee is $130. Call (937) 433-8957.

Town Hall will also host an Audition Edge Workshop Aug. 1 for those who want to try out their monologue or audition song. Fee is $10.
