Tike's Shop set to open for the holidays

DAYTON — The Tike’s Shop opens for the holidays on November 27, according to Sanda Gudorf, president of the Downtown Dayton Partnership.

The grand opening for the shop, which is a holiday store for kids, will be held between 3 to 9 p.m. at the Schuster Center Wintergarden at the corner of Second and Main Street.

The shop allows children to purchase gifts with the help of “elves” who help them stay within their budgets.

Parents can wait outside while the kids are shopping and the purchased gifts are being wrapped.

Families can also watch the animated Wonderland Window display inside the Schuster Center.

“It’s a perfect family outing as parents relive their days of shopping at Rike’s while their children experience the magic of today’s shop,” Gudorf said.

Students from the Miami Valley Youth Career Services operate and manage the shop. These students are responsible for the layout of the store and selecting the merchandise.

Santa Claus will also be making a special appearance during selected hours.

The shop is part of the 2009 Dayton Holiday Festival presented by Time Warner Cable and sponsored by the Downtown Dayton Partnership, the City of Dayton, Montgomery County and the Virginia W. Kettering Dayton Holiday Festival Fund.

Going to the King Cole for supper, Rikes to see Santa, and visit the Tike Shop is a cherished childhood memory. Glad to still see some of it still going... but I wish the Tike Shop had a few nicer things like they used to.I take my kids now, but the items they can choose from don't quite compare to what used to be available.Sign of the times guess.

Say what you may about our fair city, however, we do maintain a since of tradition and that's what makes a city great to me. Dayton has had it's up's and down's in the last 60 or so years.

I've been in Ohio for about 40 of those years. I recall when the Rikes depatment store was there. The animated windows, seeing Santa, and shopping at the Tikes store was so exciting for myself my silbiling and my cousins. Our mothers made it an anual event and we'd have Frisch's afterward. What a treat.

While there many problems with the City of Dayton and the Miami Valley, the Tike's Shop is something my wife and I have greatly appreciated with our two sons over the past 5-7 years. My hometown of Akron, OH, has nothing to compare it with. From what I saw a few years back in downtown Akron, the animatronic figures were in pathetic shape and I was embarassed that I went out of my way for my kids to see them. Anyway, I am so glad the Tike's Shop is back for my kids. Happy Holidays.
