Most Miami Valley communities can expect ghosts and goblins to holler “Trick or Treat,” from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31, the traditional Halloween Beggars Night.
“When Halloween falls on a Saturday, Beggars Night is held on Saturday,” said Mike Ratcliff, executive director of the Greater Dayton Mayors and Managers Association.
Over the years the cities and townships in Montgomery County and some neighboring counties found having Beggars Night on the same night makes it safer for everyone, because people aren’t running from community to community and driving or running across unfamiliar streets over a couple different nights. Not all choose the same hours, though most do.
Vandalia’s Beggars Night will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, Ratcliff said.
If Halloween falls on a Friday, communities usually move Beggars Night to avoid conflicts with high school football games, Ratcliff said. Beggars Night is also moved back to Saturday if Halloween falls on a Sunday, the said.
An informal consensus to have it on the same date is usually agreed upon by the Greater Dayton Mayors and Managers Association and Montgomery County’s township trustees association, he said.
A few communities, mostly in Champaign, Clark or Miami counties, are holding Beggars Night tonight. Greenville will hold Beggars Night from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday.
