DAYTON — Actress Allison Janney says the most important lesson she’s learned from her mother is the importance of being gracious and thoughtful.

“She’s not self-centered, she’s always concerned about other people, she’s gracious with her time and space, and she’s always opening her home to visiting artists,” says Janney, about her mother, Macy, who lives in Dayton. “I love my mother so much, she’s my hero.”

The Broadway star, nominated last week for a Tony award, is one of the daughters who shared reflections in honor of Mother’s Day. Many others called or e-mailed responses to our query.

On May 2 at Cox Arboretum in Miami Twp., more than 50 daughters gathered at a breakfast sponsored by Vitas Hospice Care — to remember, to reflect and to pay tribute to the bond that will remain with them for the rest of their lives.

Many also shared life lessons learned from mom.

On these pages, we’re sharing excerpts. If you’re a mom, we’re hoping you’ll be inspired. There are obviously many ways in which life lessons are transmitted. Happy Mother’s Day!
