It wasn’t too long ago we talked about how celebrities are “just like us” and mentioned a story about Blake Shelton. The Oklahoma native helped out a man whose truck was stuck in high water. Just like us, right?
Well, that proved to be true once again this week when TMZ first reported Monday, July 20 that the country megastar/”Voice” coach was divorcing fellow superstar wife Miranda Lambert after four years of marriage.
“This is not the future we envisioned,” the couple said in a statement to the Associated Press. “And it is with heavy hearts that we move forward separately. We are real people, with real lives, with real families, friends and colleagues. Therefore, we kindly ask for privacy and compassion concerning this very personal matter.”
One of the many reasons I love country music is because it is indeed about real life and real people, but I am saddened by this news. I don’t know Blake and Miranda at all. They’re not my personal friends. But I feel like I do. There was a reason they were named to Zillow’s list of “celebrities you would like to have as neighbors” in January, right?
Dozens of you have posted on our K99.1FM Facebook page, “who cares?” I do. From the first time I saw them sing together at the 2005 CMT’s 100 Greatest Duets concert where they performed the David Frizzell and Shelly West classic “You’re the Reason God Made Oklahoma.” Seeing the absolute joy on Blake’s face you knew there was magic. At the time, he was married to Kaynette Williams. They divorced several years after that, and Miranda and Blake married in Texas in May of 2011 and settled in Tishomingo, Oklahoma.
For years, “cheating” rumors dogged him, but a source recently told People Magazine, “Blake is just that incredibly loyal and dedicated husband. I can guarantee you he has been faithful to that woman.”
So what happened? Again, according to TMZ, Blake filed for divorce a few weeks ago, because he suspected Miranda was stepping out on him. TMZ says all the financial issues have been worked out thanks to a prenuptial agreement. She and all their animals have moved to their home in Nashville and Blake will stay at the ranch in Oklahoma.
So far, there hasn’t been anything out there from Miranda’s camp, although she broke down in tears at a recent concert in Wyoming when she was performing her hit, “The House That Built Me.”
“The last thing someone wants to do is cry in front of 19,000 people,” she said, asking the crowd to help her finish the song. The ballad had been written for Blake, but he gave it to Miranda. But that could just mean nothing more than she was really feeling the song.
Bottom line is we may never know what drove this couple apart. And some of you may be right, there’s no reason to be upset over two people we don’t know personally and, at the end of the day, it is their own private business and we should respect that. But I still feel like I know them, through their music and at one time, unmistakable bond. But the saddest part? If it can happen to two people who looked to have a solid union like Blake and Miranda, it can happen to any of us.
