When we began talking with the artists last summer about the idea of having a concer in honor of the kids, none of them hesitated to take part. In fact, they all went above and beyond to make the event the success it was. Earlier Saturday, Little Big Town's Kimberly Schlapman stopped by the Cracker Barrel on Miller Lane to promote her new cookbook and kitchenware. On the way, she took a few minutes to chat with us.
Five fun things to know about Kimberly Schlapman
1. Kimberly "loves Ohio boys!" Her first husband, Steven Roads, (who died from a heart attack in 2005) and second hubby, Stephen Schlapman, are both Buckeye natives.
2. She's obsessed with cookware. "I kind of have a problem, 'cause I've always had an addiction to dishes and glassware. But now I can admit I have a problem and validate it, because I teamed up with Cracker Barrel for a line of kitchenware and home goods."
3. She's a "four-star" waitress. Well, not really. "Cracker Barrel gave me an apron and you have to earn those stars! Somehow, I 'earned' four stars. Well, I didn't earn them at all, they just felt sorry for me and gave them to me. One of the waitresses with three stars looked at me and said, 'Hey! How did you get four stars?' So, when I'm wearing the apron I am very gracious, because those men and women at Cracker Barrel work hard to get them."
4. It took her two years to write her cookbook, "Oh Gussie! Cooking and Visiting in Kimberly's Kitchen." "What I love about the cookbook is my publisher allowed me to write a memoir along with all those recipes, so there's a lot of good stories in there."
5. Her favorite recipe is the glazed apple cake. "I have a sweet tooth, so I'm always going to go with the sweet stuff. It's my grandmother's recipe. She used to send me back to college when I was going back and forth to school with one of those apple cakes every time I came home, so it's really special to me."
