Mushroomhead to storm stage at McGuffy’s

There are a lot of musicians out there today who wear disguises and adopt colorful stage names. And this practice was occurring long before Lady GaGa pranced onto the scene with her space-age dance-pop and oddball, sci-fi vixen look.

The members of KISS, of course, are the big daddies of costumed rock, with their kabuki makeup, seven-inch leather heels and disregard for age-appropriate clothing. Today, there are countless acts following the metal pioneers’ lead, hiding behind latex masks and face paint, from Slipknot and Insane Clown Posse to Motogater and Gwar.

Ohio is home to its own costumed musical monster, Mushroomhead, a Cleveland-based hard rock band that has been mixing unrelenting metal with dark industrial music, experimental hip-hop and a hint of theatricality since forming in 1993.

Here’s a bit of history of the seven-piece outfit, which brings its unrelenting stage show to McGuffy’s House of Rock on Saturday, Feb. 6.

The current lineup

The band comprises founding members Steve “Skinny” Felton (drums), Jeffrey “Nothing” Hatrix (lead vocals) and Tom “Shmotz” Schmitz (keyboards), along with the addition of recruits Jack “Pig Benis” Kilcoyne (bass) in 1995, Dave “Gravy” Felton (guitar) in 1999, Rick “Stitch” Thomas (turntables, samples) in 2001 and Waylon Reavis (lead vocals) in 2004.

Indie to major label

Mushroomhead released its first three albums, “Mushroomhead,” “Superbuick” and “M3,” on the group’s own Filthy Hands Records. “XX,” the group’s fourth album, was released by indie label Eclipse in 2001. The album was re-released by Universal Records the following year. The group’s fifth album, “XIII” from 2003, was also released by Universal, and was Mushroomhead’s best-selling record to date.

Back to an indie

Despite the commercial success with Universal, the members of Mushroomhead decided to sever ties with the music behemoth and signed on with metal indie label Megaforce Records. The New York-based record company released the group’s studio album, “Savior Sorrow,” in 2006 and the live DVD, “Mushroomhead Vol. 2,” in 2008. Megaforce will be releasing the band’s still-untitled full-length album this summer.

Scary music

It has been several years since “Savior Sorrow” was released, but Mushroomhead did release some new music in 2009. The song, “Your Soul Is Mine,” was featured on the soundtrack to the film “Saw 6.” Friends of the band can view a video for the song at the band’s Facebook page.
