For the next-to-last concert of its final season, Soirees Musicales International Piano Series welcomes the return of Washington, D.C.-based pianist Eric Himy.

Soirees founder, Don Hageman, called Himy “an amazing pianist” but just one of more than 90 pianists of international distinction he has presented during the 40-year run of the series.

“Soirees Musicales started as an idea,” said Hageman, reflecting on the evolution of his concert series. “I played a recital in Philadelphia in a friend’s studio, which was an old Carriage House. I thought, my gosh what a beautiful place. Shortly after that, I acquired the Jane Reece Studio. I began hosting house concerts there.”

As a member and later officer in the American Matthay Association (piano pedagogy), Hageman was able to network with pianists and agents worldwide.

“The first pianists were close friends,” Hageman recalled. “The very first was Earl Moss from Toronto. We did two Dayton premieres that night. From then on, all the pianists, I can’t tell you.”

Soirees eventually moved from the cozy confines of Hageman’s studio to the Dayton Art Institute.

Soirees Musicales has been a 40-year labor of love for Hageman but he admits it’s time to wrap.

“I’m going to miss it,” he said. “I won’t miss the work. I will miss the camaraderie and association with all the phenomenal artists. I’ll miss that a lot.”
