Colleges open theater season with prize-winning dramas

Wright State University and Cedarville University will open the local college theater season this week with prize-winning dramas that were made into films.

WSU will present David Auburn’s 2001 Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winner “Proof,” the rare contemporary play that ran for more than two years on Broadway.

Cedarville will open the same night, Thursday, Oct. 1, with William Gibson’s dramatization of the Helen Keller story, “The Miracle Worker,” which won five Tonys in 1960.

Mary Donahoe is directing “Proof,” a story about genius, mental illness, a deceased math prof and his daughter. The cast includes Amy Geist as Catherine, Valerie Gerlock as Claire, Zach Brown as Robert and Cameron Hansel as Hal.

Performances are at 8 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays, Oct. 1-3 and 8-10; 2 p.m. Oct. 4, 10 and 11, and 7 p.m. Oct. 7 in the WSU Creative Arts Center off Colonel Glenn Highway in Fairborn. Tickets are $17-$19. Call (937) 775-2500 to purchase.

Donald N.C. Jones is staging Cedarville’s “Miracle Worker.” Laura Anfang plays Helen Keller. Times are 8 p.m. Oct. 1-3 and 8-10, and 2 p.m. Oct. 3 and 10 in DeVries Theatre in the Stevens Student Center, 251 N. The Lebanon Theatre Company will open its 13th season with the classic Moss Hart and George Kaufman comedy “You Can’t Take It With You” Friday, Oct. 2, through Oct. 11 in the Top of the Shoe Theatre, 120 E. South St. John Marshall directs.

Opening night Friday, Oct. 2, is a dinner theater presentation in partnership with the Golden Lamb Inn, which is three blocks from the theater. Other performances will be at 8 p.m. Oct. 3, 9 and 10, and 2 p.m. Oct. 4 and 11. Tickets are $16, with $10 off dinner for two at the Golden Lamb. La Comedia Dinner Theatre, 765 W. Central Ave. (Ohio 73) in Springboro, is having auditions by appointment for its holiday production “La Comedia Christmas Spectacular.” Boys ages 7-11 are needed for roles that will be double cast.
