Murals to brighten Xenia

Hot Topics

XENIA — The largest paved trail hub in Ohio is located in Xenia. A replica of the original 1880’s Xenia Station at Miami Avenue and Detroit Street links 170 miles of paved bikeways to Springfield, Spring Valley, Creekside, Jamestown and Cedarville. So it is fitting that “trails” is the theme of Xenia Mural Society’s Call to Artists to submit designs for the first of several murals proposed for the city.

The Society is a component of Greene Giving, and is made up of citizen volunteers interested in promoting expansion and preservation of Xenia sites.

Owners of two buildings have agreed to host a mural: Montgomery Insurance and Investments at 114 S. Detroit St. and Express Yourself Coffeehouse and Art Gallery at 78 E. Main St.

Artists can interpret the “trails” theme to include buffalo trails to Native American trails, pioneer trails, early roadways, railroads, hiking or bicycling. There will be a $500 honorarium for the winning design. Given current economic conditions, the Society is working to have a “brush ready” project prepared in order to facilitate creation of a mural or murals as soon as funding permits.

The deadline for submission of up to three detailed sketches per artist is July 1.
Finalists will be asked to submit a full color rendering by Aug. 15 that’s at least 24 inches wide. Final competing designs will be displayed for public comment at Xenia’s Rail & Arts Fest on Aug. 22.

The winning submission will be announced Sept. 19 at Xenia’s Old Fashioned Days. Application forms and other details can be found at www.XeniaMurals.org, or by calling the Xenia Area Chamber of Commerce at (937) 372-3591.
