Now that the Miley Cyrus spectacle from the recent MTV Video Music Awards show seems to be fading from the radar, the new hot pop-culture discussion is the actors cast in the “Fifty Shades of Grey” movie.
Dakota Johnson, daughter of Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith, will play Anastasia, while Christian Grey will be portrayed by “Sons of Anarchy” actor Charlie Hunnam.
If you have no idea who they are, neither do a lot of us. Since the film is based on the adult novel by EL James, chances are good that the relatively unknown Hunnam will soon be in the running for People Magazine’s “Sexiest Man of the Year.” Unless scores of country music fans, especially the ladies, have their way. Then the title goes to Luke Bryan, hands down.
You have heard of Luke Bryan haven’t you? He’s only the hottest thing in music these days. Girls want to be with him and guys just want to be him.
Current holder of the No. 1 album in the country, “Crash My Party,” Academy of Country Music “Entertainer of the Year”, headliner on the sold out Dirt Road Diaries Tour with husband-and-wife duo Thompson Square and the equally white-hot boys of Florida Georgia Line. Not to mention the NSFW viral video on You Tube, “Don’t Drop That Thun Thun,” a montage of Luke’s dance moves, which, by the way, will make any woman blush for days. I still am. And nevermind how many times I watch it just to make sure it has the same effect.
Let’s just say that while Luke claims there’s no acting in his future, if Hunnam decides to drop out of “Fifty Shades” or any of the Chippendale dancers need a tag out, the Georgia native is the guy.
Why is Luke so popular? Ladies, if you’ve watched the video by now, you’ll know he can dance. But it’s not just that. It’s not his voice, which is very nice, but not at Vince Gill level. It’s not necessarily his writing skills — most of his songs aren’t very deep and are about having a good time. He’s pretty to look at; that’s a plus. The crowds love him and feel connected. Whether he’s taking selfie pictures with their phones, bringing up a 6-year-old to sing a duet, covering a Lady Gaga tune or crooning a streamlined version of his hit “Drunk on You,” a Luke Bryan show is an experience. Nearly two hours of nonstop, Elvis hip swiveling and a backward-hat-wearing good time.
Above all that, he is a genuinely nice guy. I remember meeting him at Fraze Pavilion back in 2006. He got 20 minutes on stage opening up for Dwight Yoakam in the rain. As he was heading off to his next gig in Columbus, he asked if anyone wanted to ride over with him as he was traveling alone. Missed my chance then. But he is coming to Riverbend the 26th of this month to perform at a show that sold out in four minutes. Think he needs a ride?
