Dayton Does Dayton fest pays tribute to local music

If you think organizing a festival like Dayton Does Dayton is simply securing bands and a venue, then you’ve never met Louie Wood Jr. The local promoter also solicits sponsorship and hires a photographer for an elaborate photo shoot with the bands.

Wood recently discussed the seventh annual tribute to Dayton music, returning to Gilly’s on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 24 and 25. Participating acts include Reyna Spears, Universal Love Experience, John Mullen, Jersey Joe Band and Seth Canen & the Carriers.

HONORING HOMETOWN TUNES

“What truly sets Dayton Does Dayton apart from other events is just how precious and truly unique it is. No other city I know of spends a two-night weekend paying homage to its own hometown music. This is a very sincere and very well thought out local music tribute show, from the early planning stages of it to the very last performed song at the concert.”

ALL STYLES WELCOME

“We really have everything music-wise this year. We have excellent blues, fusion rock with choreographed dancing, classic rock styles, easy listening rock ‘n’ roll and studio-quality-sounding indie rock. We have deep acoustic folk acts, jazz and country so there’s something at DDD for everyone.”

PRIDE & SELF-PROMOTION

“As the producer for this event, I like to prove the dying art of self-promotion can be fun and fulfilling to musicians. I like to help set the standard as a grassroots event that working together as a team to get the word out about DDD is a very rewarding experience. Not many promoters these days are encouraging bands to get out there in the community and to be proud of promoting themselves.”

ATTENTION TO DETAIL

“So much goes into the love and labor of making this event happen. Bands and solo artists sometimes spend up to four months working on their covers and originals exclusively for this live concert. They really put a lot of time and effort in their art gearing up for DDD each year. We even create a fancy program guide for the guests of the event, which lists the covers and original material the acts are doing, as well as our sponsors and contributors.”

AN ONGOING CONCERN

“I probably spend almost a third of my life preparing and keeping DDD afloat every year. The hardest part, sometimes, is departing from it after it’s over. I’ve become attached to it — it’s a part of me. It has become such a big part of my life for almost a decade now and, hopefully, it will be for many years to come.”
