Jordan Pierce committed to the University of Dayton last fall and signed to play for the Dayton Flyers in November, but until Tuesday at Fordham, he had never seen his future team in person.

Pierce, one of four recruits in the 2017 class, traveled from his home in Scotch Plains, N.J., to Rose Hill Gym. Getting a taste of Dayton basketball and the fan support that comes with it made him more excited for his future.

“I can’t wait,” said Pierce, a senior at Union Catholic High School. “I know we’re in Fordham’s gym, but all I saw was bright red.”

At 7-foot, Pierce will be the biggest Flyer next season. He will not get to play with any of the current seniors, of course, but was impressed by them, especially Kendall Pollard, and the rest of the team, which pulled away in the final five minutes for a 75-66 victory.

“The first half was really intense,” Pierce said. “Then we got control of it in the second half. Definitely, KP was going off. Darrell (Davis) was knocking down 3s. Early in the second half, that helped us a lot.”

Pierce turned his attention toward his future Tuesday, but he’s also focused on the present and finishing his senior season strong.

“We’re 8-7 right now,” he said. “We kind of had a rough start, but we’re picking things up. Jersey basketball, in general, is tough.”
