Want to make your own comic book? Learn how at this local workshop

Have you ever dreamed of making a comic book? That dream can become a reality for those who go to Comic Book Studio Day at Rosewood Arts Centre on April 8. Take a look at our 5 favorite things about this cool event.

Learn the skills to make your own comics.

“Comic Book Studio Day is beginner-friendly, so you do not need a lot of experience making comics to get a lot out of it,” says Andrew Dailey, Cultural Arts Program Supervisor for City of Kettering. Workshops will be given on comic book illustration and plot, so aspiring creators can learn how to make their own. Basics of drawing and writing will be taught in three sessions. The workshops are a la carte, so people can sign up for one, two, or all three of them.

Rub elbows with industry pros.

Dayton-based comic maker Bruce O. Hughes will give a workshop on story development. Professional graphic designer and artist Adam Fields, from Eaton, will teach attendees how to draw the human form. Uko Smith will host another workshop on illustration, his focusing on mixed-media techniques. There will also be a free "Artist Row" segment of the event from 12 to 1, where the guest instructors will be showing off their work and talking with guests.

Fun for all ages!

Instruction will be provided in separate workshops for adults and kids. “The youth and adult workshops are similar in content but focus more toward age-appropriate approaches to the subject matter,” Dailey tells Dayton.com.

Kids can win free stuff in the drawing contest game.

Children will compete in 2 drawing contest games from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. "We do a draw-off and a comic-centric version of Pictionary," Dailey said. Winners will take home cool prizes that the organizers of Comic Book Studio Day will pick up at Gem City Comic Con

When you register for workshops early, you get free passes to Gem City Comic Con.

If you sign up for all 3 workshops before March 31, you’ll get not one, but two free passes to Gem City Comic Con, Dayton’s only annual comic book convention. This awesome event takes place every year at the Dayton Convention Center. This year’s Gem City Comic Con will be April 1st and 2nd, the weekend before Comic Book Studio Day, so you can go get all excited about comics and then learn to make your own!
