Definition:

Surgery performed to relieve pyloric stenosis, a narrowing of the pyloric channel at the outlet of the stomach, resulting in forceful vomiting which can occur in children as an congenital defect. This surgery allows the stomach contents to empty into the duodenum (small intestine) more readily. Symptoms usually occur early, within the first few weeks of life. Pyloric stenosis is much more common in boys than in girls.

Description

After general anesthesia is administered, the abdomen is cleaned and draped. A small incision is made in the abdomen.The surgeon makes a cut into the pyloric muscle (stomach outlet) down to the mucosa thus releasing the restriction. No tissue is removed and the stomach lining is not opened. The pyloric muscle returns to normal size with time.
