Proofreading job materials remains crucial

"OBJECTIVE: I would like to secure a challenging position and accell in the accounting industry."

Far from an "accellent" start to the resume.

The example above shows why it's critical to carefully proofread your application materials for spelling and grammatical mistakes. Just one error can damage your chances of landing a job interview. Keep in mind, however, that your editing process should involve more than simply running your computer's spell-check and scanning for typos. Also review your resume and cover letter for clarity, weeding out distracting details that don't relate to your qualifications for the open position.

"HOBBIES: Love to attend theme parks and ride roller coasters with husband and grandchildren."

It has its ups and downs.

"INTERESTS: Tuxedos."

Our dress code is slightly less formal.

"ACCOMPLISHMENTS: I've learned to say excuse me in 11 languages."

He must be very clumsy.

The following bizarre statement was provided by a marketing candidate who apparently is (a) a night owl and (b) well-hydrated:

"INTERESTS: In my free time, I enjoy watching movies until the wee hours of the morning and drinking absurd amounts of water."

It's OK to show some personality in your application materials, but don't go overboard. When in doubt, be straightforward instead of playful.

COVER LETTER: "Research is like candy to me."

A job seeker with a sweet tooth for study.

Finally, don't include your reference list on your resume. Create a separate document with the names and contact information of your references to provide to prospective employers that request it. And help yourself by choosing current or former colleagues and supervisors who can speak to your professional skills and experience.

"REFERENCES: My girlfriend."

We need someone a little more impartial.
